Our Venue

Hilton Hall is an 18th-century mansion house now in use as an Office and Business Centre at Hilton, near Wolverhampton, in Staffordshire. It is a Grade I listed building.

For More Information
  • Origins and Early History

The original manor house was commissioned by Sir Henry Swinnerton in the early 14th century. In 1547, Margaret Swynnerton married Henry Vernon of Sudbury, Derbyshire, uniting two prominent recusant families. Margaret inherited the house and estate in 1562 following the death of her father, Humphrey Swynnerton, formalized in a deed dated May 8, 1564. Upon Margaret's death in 1587, the property became part of the Vernon estates.

  • Georgian Alterations

In the early 1720s, Henry Vernon, High Sheriff of Staffordshire, altered the house in the Georgian style. Key modifications included adding a pediment with a coat of arms. The refined design marked a significant aesthetic update to the historic estate.

  • Victorian Expansion

During the early 1830s, the estate underwent substantial expansion. A third storey was added to the main building, harmoniously extending the Georgian design. The 1720s pediment was raised to match the new height. Additional changes included partial infilling of the moat and the creation of a lower rear extension for kitchens and service areas. The main block was further enhanced by giant corner pilasters crowned with urns.

The Hexagonal Tower

The Vernon family erected a distinctive hexagonal tower in memory of Admiral Edward Vernon, commemorating his 1739 victory at Portobello, Panama. This unique monument remains a Grade II listed structure.

20th-Century Ownership Changes

The Vernon family sold the estate in 1955 to Sidney Thomas Pickard. In 1958, Pickard sold Hilton Hall and a small parcel of land to the Order of St. Joseph of Bordeaux, whose nuns owned the property until 1984. From 1986 to 1999, the estate served as the corporate headquarters for Tarmac plc.

Current Use

Hilton Hall now operates as a commercial office and business and healthcare centre, blending its rich historical legacy with modern functionality.
